CARACAS (MarketWatch) — Kraft mayonnaise, Peter Pan peanut butter, European cheeses and Johnny Walker whiskey are plentiful here. But pity the poor housewife who’s been sent out to find a carton of eggs. As the wife of a recently expatriated oilman, I can count on “the company” to provide my family with a luxury apartment far beyond our regular means, a car with a driver and a 24-hour emergency hotline, but eggs? Not even the might of Big Oil can get me a dozen eggs.

It’s a weird state of affairs in oil- and cash-rich Venezuela. Supported by this decade’s unprecedented rise in oil prices and the populist government’s largesse, Venezuelans have gone on a spending spree, taxing this cosmopolitan city’s limited infrastructure with their consumption. City streets and highways are at a permanent standstill, not large enough to accommodate the multitude of shiny new SUVs, sensible sedans and jalopies fighting for the right of way. The shopping malls are always uncomfortably packed. And construction cranes are popping up all over town, flanked by giant billboards promising yet more malls. Direct TV satellites jut out from both expensive high-rise balconies and the rooftops of cinder-block homes that cling to the tropical hills surrounding this city in a valley. And an abundance of pirated DVDs, Xbox games and prepaid phone cards ensure that not just the moneyed set enjoy the latest in electronics. But eggs — neither I nor anyone else can find eggs.

Caracas, Jul. 13, 2007 (CWNews.com) – Venezuelan foreign minister Nicolas Madura has referred to Catholic Church leaders as “repulsive” because of their criticism of the country’s government.

Madura responded angrily to a statement issued last Friday by the country’s bishops, calling for “dialogue and reconciliation” in Venezuela. The bishops’ statement was generally interpreted as a rebuke to President Hugo Chavez, who has clashed repeatedly with the Catholic hierarchy. In recent weeks the bishops have expressed concerns about a Chavez plan for constitutional revisions, which
critics see as an effort to consolidate political power in the presidency.

Maduro charged that Catholic Church leaders are “using the title ‘bishop’ to make political judgments and to destabilize the government.”

Paraguayan Congress views Venezuela’s prompt membership as unviable

Approval within a three-month term of Venezuela’s inclusion in the Common Market of the South (Mercosur), at the request of Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez, is hardly possible and may take longer, said Tuesday some Paraguayan lawmakers.

 

The Venezuelan application for the trade bloc is currently at the Senate, one of the two chambers in the Paraguayan Congress, where there are clashing positions, according to its members.

In the opinion of lawyer Gerardo Fernández, a specialist in Constitution-related matters, government followers, including local governors, mayors, congresspersons and leaders of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), are at odds over the constitutional reform heralded by President Hugo Chávez because it runs counter to their interests. Fernández, the chair of the opposition’s committee on constitutional reform, claimed that a report issued by the Presidential Committee for Constitutional Reform involves replacement of the 1999 Constitution. “Principles, values and fundamental issues are being changed,” he said. In his view, such proposals for structural changes require a nationwide debate for the purpose of consensus.

En su editorial de este miércoles, el diario argentino La Nación califica como “incorregible” la conducta del presidente Hugo Chávez en relación con el proceso de entrada de Venezuela al Mercosur, en tanto sus acciones y declaraciones reflejan su impaciencia, la falta de división de poderes públicos en este país, convirtiéndole en un factor de desunión del bloque. Así, La Nación pide a los parlamentos de Brasil y Paraguay, que se tomen su tiempo en considerar el ingreso venezolano.

A poco más de un año de la incorporación de Venezuela en el Mercosur, la impronta política que pretendió adquirir el bloque con ella descarriló en la retórica grandilocuente, pero vacía de contenido, del presidente Hugo Chávez, más interesado en imponer su posición ideológica que en abocarse a facilitar la integración regional; solucionar las asimetrías que denuncian Uruguay y Paraguay, y tender a una mayor inserción internacional.
