Pakistani honey project wins World Challenge 08

London, 19 December 2008. This Saturday (20 December) BBC World News broadcasts the final programme of the World Challenge 08 series, announcing Plan Bee as the winner. The Pakistani project helps female beekeepers boost their income by selling high quality honey.

The northern areas of Pakistan are among the poorest and most isolated regions in the country. Effective development assistance has yet to reach these hilly, remote areas and it is the women and children who are most affected. The only workable and sustainable solution is to capitalise on local resources, building on what is achievable as well as culturally acceptable. Established by the Hashoo Foundation, Plan Bee enables honeybee farmers to earn more than twice the price they would in the local market, while making the most of their skills and environment without placing pressure on the local ecosystem.

World Challenge is a major global competition that rewards businesses and projects that put something back into their communities. It is run by BBC World News, the BBC’s international news and information television channel, and Newsweek, the weekly global current affairs magazine, in association with Shell. Now in its fourth year World Challenge is still popular, with more than 71,000 people around the world voting online for their favourite finalist in the 2008 competition.

A special programme airs on BBC World News this weekend, showcasing the awards ceremony hosted by the BBC’s Zeinab Badawi, where Plan Bee receive a US$20,000 prize grant from Shell.

Two runner-up projects are each awarded US$10,000 by Shell. First runner-up is Agriculture School, which trains young people from rural Paraguay how to use sustainable and organic agriculture to generate income. Second runner-up is Shanti Sewa Griha, a Nepalese initiative dedicated to giving leprosy victims and others afflicted by disease and physical disability, a productive place in society.

Venezuela creates own time zone

The technical merits for this measure are all questionable, but that is not going to be our focus. We just one to note , this is what happens when you have a dictator with way too much time, ideas like this come to his mind. And BTW he actually (likely) believes he is making us the biggest of the favors by saving us from the imperialist imposition of -4 GMT, thank you Hugo … what about real work for a change?

Venezuelan early risers will now get more daylight

Venezuela creates its own unique time zone on Sunday, putting the clock back half-an-hour on a permanent basis. President Hugo Chavez says that an earlier dawn means the performance of the country will improve, as more people will wake up in daylight.

“I don’t care if they call me crazy, the new time will go ahead,” he said.

But critics say the move is unnecessary and the president simply wants to be in a different time zone from his arch-rival, the United States.

The new time puts Venezuela four-and-a-half hours behind Greenwich Mean Time, and out of step with all its neighbours.

Shut up, Spain’s king tells Chavez

Spain’s King Juan Carlos told Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez to “shut up” as the Ibero-American summit drew to a close in Santiago, Chile. The outburst came after Mr Chavez called former Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar a “fascist”.

Mr Chavez then interrupted Spanish PM Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero’s calls for him to be more diplomatic, prompting the king’s outburst.

Latin American, Portuguese, Spanish and Andorran leaders were meeting in Chile.

‘Democratically elected’

Mr Chavez called Mr Aznar, a close ally of US President George W Bush, a fascist, adding “fascists are not human. A snake is more human.”

Mr Zapatero said: “[Former Prime Minister] Aznar was democratically elected by the Spanish people and was a legitimate representative of the Spanish people.”

Mr Chavez repeatedly tried to interrupt, despite his microphone being turned off. The king leaned forward and said: “Why don’t you shut up?”

According to reports, the king used a familiar term normally used only for close acquaintances – or children.

Later, Mr Chavez responded to the king’s rebuke.

According to the Associated Press news agency, he said: “I do not offend by telling the truth. The Venezuelan government reserves the right to respond to any aggression, anywhere, in any space and in any manner.”

The theme of this year’s 22-nation summit was “social cohesion”.

Earlier, a row between neighbours Argentina and Uruguay threatened to overshadow the summit.

The long-running dispute erupted anew after Uruguay gave an operating permit to a paper mill despite unresolved environmental objections by Argentina.

On Saturday, scores of Argentine protesters staged a peaceful protest against the setting up of the plant, which they fear could contaminate their crops.

Some of the marchers carried banners reading “No to the paper plant!”. Police stopped them from marching across a bridge into Uruguay.

Since his election in a landslide victory in 1998, Mr Chavez has largely fired up his rhetoric against the United States and her allies.

Hugo Chavez used his speech to lash at US influence Speech Extract

In a dramatic speech to the United Nations in September 2006, Mr Chavez famously described George W Bush as the “Devil”.

The Devil is right at home. The Devil, the Devil himself, is right in the house.

And the Devil came here yesterday. Yesterday the Devil came here. Right here. [crosses himself] And it smells of sulphur still today.

Yesterday, ladies and gentlemen, from this rostrum, the president of the United States, the gentleman to whom I refer as the Devil, came here, talking as if he owned the world. Truly. As the owner of the world.

DANGER OR DONKEY?

Mr Bush has long been the focus of Mr Chavez’s tirades. In a nationally televised speech in March 2006, the Venezuelan leader was not short of ways to described the US president:

You are ignoramus, you are a burro, Mr Danger… or to say it to you in my bad English: [switching languages] You are a donkey, Mr Danger. You are a donkey, Mr George W Bush.

[Returning to Spanish] You are a coward, a killer, a [perpetrator of] genocide, an alcoholic, a drunk, a liar, an immoral person, Mr Danger. You are the worst, Mr Danger. The worst of this planet… A psychologically sick man, I know it.

DON’T MESS WITH ME, LITTLE GIRL

Condoleezza Rice had described Venezuela as a menace

Mr Chavez has referred to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice as “little girl” on a number of occasions.

In February 2006, Ms Rice described Venezuela as a menace to regional democracy.

She spoke of an “inoculation strategy” against a country she called a “sidekick” of Iran.

During his weekly Sunday broadcast, Mr Chavez replied with a warning to Ms Rice:

Remember, little girl, I’m like the thorn tree that flowers on the plain. I waft my scent to passers-by and prick he who shakes me. Don’t mess with me, Condoleezza. Don’t mess with me, girl.

He blew a screen kiss to Ms Rice and jokingly referred to her as “Condolence.”

IMPERIALIST PAWN

Tony Blair was accused of not having an morals

The former British Prime Minister Tony Blair also came in for verbal abuse. In 2006, Mr Blair urged Venezuela to abide by the rules of the international community. Mr Chavez replied that Mr Blair had flouted those very rules by invading Iraq.

Don’t be shameless, Mr Blair. Don’t be immoral, Mr Blair. You are one of those who have no morals. You are not one who has the right to criticise anyone about the rules of the international community.

You are an imperialist pawn who attempts to curry favour with Danger Bush-Hitler, the number one mass murderer and assassin there is on the planet.

Go straight to hell, Mr Blair.

THE NEW HOLOCAUST

Also in 2006, Mr Chavez warned that his country would most likely sever links with Israel in protest at its military offensive in Lebanon.

He said he had “no interest” in maintaining relations with Israel, which he has accused of committing genocide.

Israel has gone mad. It’s attacking, doing the same thing to the Palestinian and Lebanese people that it has criticised – and with reason – [in the case of] the Holocaust. But this is a new Holocaust.

Venezuela ‘to sever Israel ties’

SAD, SO SAD

Mr Chavez has verbally blasted his neighbours on a number of occasions. In 2005, he described his then Mexican counterpart, Vicente Fox, as a puppy dog for United States imperialism.

Mr Chavez said Mr Fox had, as he put it, been left bleeding by a recent Summit of the Americas.

It makes one sad to see the sell-out of President Fox, really it makes one sad.

How sad that the president of a people like the Mexicans lets himself become the puppy dog of the empire.

YET ANOTHER ‘IDIOT’

Earlier this year, Mr Chavez called on the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Jose Miguel Insulza, to resign after he condemned the Venezuelan government’s decision not to renew a private TV station’s licence.

Dr Insulza is quite an idiot, a true idiot.

The insipid Dr Insulza should resign from the secretariat of the OAS for daring to play that role.

IN PRAISE OF MUGABE

President Chavez praised Robert Mugabe as a “freedom fighter”

At times, Mr Chavez has riled the international community not with his verbal abuse, but with his praise of controversial heads of state.

In 2004, he praised Zimbabwe’s Robert Mugabe as a “freedom fighter”.

I give you a replica of liberator Simon Bolivar’s sword. For you who, like Bolivar, took up arms to liberate your people.

For you who, like Bolivar, are and will always be a true freedom fighter. [Mugabe] continues, alongside his people, to confront the pretensions of new imperialists.

Mr Mugabe, who was in Venezuela for a summit of the G-15 group of developing nations, smiled as he unsheathed the sword and swung it about.

HALLOWEEN

In 2005, Mr Chavez issued an attack on Halloween, telling his countrymen that it had no place in Venezuelan society.

He used his weekly TV and radio broadcast to caution that the observance is strictly a “gringa,” or North American custom. He described it as:

Terrorism, putting fear into other nations, putting fear into their own people.

Families go and begin to disguise their children as witches. This is contrary to our way.

The world-renowned opera singer confessed that the concert evoked the strongest emotions he had ever felt.

The young players have won over many big name musicians

Sir Simon Rattle, director of the Berlin Philharmonic, swore that the country’s youth orchestras were doing the most important work in classical music anywhere in the world.

And former Berlin Philharmonic director Claudio Abbado only needed to see one performance by the orchestra to invite the Venezuelans to play in Germany.

The talented musicians of the National System of Venezuelan Youth and Children’s Orchestras are a source of national pride, like football stars in other Latin American countries.

They have also inspired 23 countries across the hemisphere to launch similar music education programmes.

Israel procesa a banda neonazi

Todos los miembros de la banda fueron llevados al tribunal de Tel Aviv.

Un tribunal de Tel Aviv acusó formalmente de agresión agravada, posesión de armas y distribución de material racista, a ocho jóvenes integrantes de una banda neonazi.

La policía de Israel sospecha que el grupo realizó varios ataques contra extranjeros, homosexuales y religiosos judíos.

Los acusados, cuyas edades van de los 17 a 21 años, son todos inmigrantes de la antigua Unión Soviética que adquirieron la ciudadanía israelí por ser descendientes de familias judías.

Aunque se cree que hay decenas de admiradores de Adolfo Hitler en Israel, ésta es la primera vez que las autoridades abren un proceso contra una banda neonazi en ese país.

El caso, además de causar consternación, reabrió el debate sobre la llamada “Ley del retorno” que garantiza la ciudadanía a los descendientes de hasta segunda generación judíos de cualquier parte del mundo que decidan radicarse en Israel.

Holocausto

Los jueces usaron como pruebas grabaciones y fotos en internet de la banda.

En las puertas del tribunal de Tel Aviv, la abuela de uno de los jóvenes declaró a los periodistas que “hubiera preferido morir en el Holocausto” antes que pasar por la situación que le genera su nieto.

Los magistrados imputaron al grupo haber conspirado para cometer delitos, por lo que si se tiene en cuenta los otros cargos, podría exponerse a penas de entre dos y ochos años de prisión.

Tras la detención de la pandilla, el primer ministro Ehud Olmert había expresado su horror por lo que llamó “la violencia por la violencia misma”.

Pero al mismo tiempo aludió a un “fracaso educativo” en el país que habría permitido -según insinuó- este surgimiento de ideas neonazis en Israel.

Precisamente, este lunes, la policía denunció haber descubierto esvásticas pintadas en una sinagoga en Eilat, en el sur del país, junto a leyendas tales como “Hitler es el Mesías” y “Larga vida a Hitler y Jesucristo”.

Neonazis: creciendo en la sombra

En Alemania, el partido neonazi NPD (Partido Nacionalista Democrático) está atrayendo a más votantes a pesar de los esfuerzos por minimizar su presencia en el país.

Tan sólo el pasado fin de semana lograron avanzar nuevamente en elecciones locales.

En un debate televisivo con los ganadores de las elecciones en Mecklemburgo (Alemania), los candidatos de los partidos tradicionales daban sus acostumbrados comentarios.

Lejos, en una esquina, casi fuera de la pantalla, estaba Udo Pastoers, el candidato principal del NPD.

A su lado, un periodista que le estaba especialmente asignado, le preguntó a boca de jarro: “Señor Pastoers, ¿puedo llamarlo un neonazi, ya que usted dijo que lamentablemente un Hitler nace cada mil años?”.

Pastoers, entrenado ya en las burlas de la prensa, respondió que sus palabras fueron mal interpretadas.

El periodista entonces quiso saber “si tampoco es correcto que llamó a Hitler un fenómeno en lo político, en lo militar y en lo económico”.

Pastoers respondió que esa afirmación se apoya en hechos fácilmente medibles; pero cuando el recién elegido militante de la extrema derecha se quiso explayar, el periodista le quitó el micrófono y terminó la entrevista.

Derecha sin plataforma

El nazismo gobernó Alemania de 1933 a 1945.

Un acuerdo explícito de la prensa alemana es “no darle ninguna plataforma a la extrema derecha” .

Y de hecho las únicas veces que se ven y oyen políticos neonazis son en las elecciones y, por tercera ocasión esta vez, para constatar su avance.

Como hongos que crecen en la sombra, los intentos de dejar en la oscuridad a los partidos de extrema derecha parecen tener un efecto inverso.

“Los criminales de ultraderecha no deben estar en el Parlamento, sino frente a los Tribunales”, declaró el secretario general del SPD, Hubertus Heil.

El NPD, por su lado, despacha a todo el sistema político, periodistas incluidos, como “bandidos”; cualquier agresión confirmaría, a fin de cuentas su misión.

“No es sólo una protesta”

El NPD consiguió el pasado fin de semana el 7,3 % de los votos en el estado federal de Mecklemburgo-Pomerania Occidental; en algunas regiones del estado alcanzó el 15% y en pueblos como Postlow, con 144 habitantes, el 38%. En la región de Ueckermuende un 35%.

Los analistas constataron que el sector que más votó por el NPD fueron los jóvenes (12%) y los desocupados (20%).

No creo que esta votación sea una protesta contra los partidos políticos establecidos. No son los partidos democráticos los culpables, sino los votantes mismos de los neonazis Wolfgang Thierse, vicepresidente del Bundestag (Parlamento)

La tesis habitual apuntaba a la frustración de los habitantes de la ex Alemania Oriental, una región con un promedio de desocupación que alcanza el 20%, más del doble de la cifra en la Alemania Occidental.

Su votación al NPD significaría entonces un voto de protesta en favor un partido que juega con estar por fuera del sistema político.

La inquietante tesis de Thierse señala, sin embargo, que muchos habitantes del este alemán han elegido al NPD porque se sienten representados por él.

Sólo un 38% de los ciudadanos de la ex Alemania comunista creen que la democracia es la mejor forma de gobierno. La pregunta sería entonces ¿qué quiere el otro 62%?.

Por el partido neonazi votaron jóvenes y desempleados.

El pasado comunista de la Alemania del Este parece seguir marcando, aunque de manera extremadamente equívoca, una parte del electorado de la región, aparentemente en busca de un Estado que no se identifica con el actual.

Muchos políticos quieren ahora volver a intentar prohibir al NPD, un esfuerzo que fracasó en el año 2003 debido al excesivo éxito del servicio secreto alemán que reclutó muchos informantes pagados dentro de la cúpula del NPD.

Buena parte de las declaraciones que mostraban los objetivos anticonstitucionales del NPD provenían de algunos de esos informantes, con lo cual el proceso cayó estrepitosamente.

Ahora, el recién elegido Pastoers, que visitó y alabó la Colonia Dignidad en Chile, compró 50 hectáreas para iniciar un enclave “de familias puramente germanas” cerca de Schwerin, la capital de Mecklemburgo.

Considerar y tratar a los grupos de neonazis como una patología política que vive del desencanto no parece haber ayudado a detener su avance; esta tercera victoria de la extrema derecha en las elecciones parlamentarias regionales alemanas parece haber sido la señal de alarma que faltaba.

Procesan a la familia Pinochet

En Muevete no somos jueces, ni conocemos los cargos contra la familia, ni podemos decir si todos son culpables. Pero a uno no deja de entrarle un fresquito. Dictadores del mundo, la justicia llega, muchas veces de formas muy inesperadas. De derecha, o de Izquierda, no hay diferencia, dictador es dictador.

La orden incluye a la viuda de Pinochet, Lucía Hiriart, y sus cinco hijos: Augusto, Lucía, Marco Antonio, Jaqueline y Verónica.

La viuda de Augusto Pinochet, Lucía Hiriart, y sus cinco hijos fueron procesados por malversación de caudales públicos y quedaron bajo arresto por orden del juez chileno a cargo del llamado caso Riggs.

A ellos se suman trece militares, algunos en retiro y otros en actividad, dos abogados, un ex diplomático, el albacea de Pinochet y su secretaria personal.

Nadie está por sobre la ley Michelle Bachelet, presidenta de Chile

La orden judicial fue emitida este jueves por el magistrado Carlos Cerda, quien durante un año y medio estuvo alejado de la causa debido a que la defensa de la familia del ex gobernante de facto había presentado recursos judiciales en su contra.

La orden judicial

La resolución establece que “un grupo de personas que durante años tuvo a su cargo fondos de gastos reservados pertenecientes al erario nacional, los sustrajo”.

La investigación sobre las cuentas millonarias que se le descubrieron a Pinochet en el extranjero tiene decenas de miles de páginas y señala que el desvío de dinero del fisco se habría utilizado en beneficio personal de los imputados.

La defensa sostiene que la familia Pinochet es inocente.

Ampliaciones de residencias personales y viajes son algunos de los ejemplos que se mencionan. También se incluyen números de cheques que se utilizaron en algunas de las transacciones.

Sin embargo, la defensa sostiene que la familia Pinochet es inocente y anunció que presentará un recurso para revertir la orden de detención.

Penas de cárcel

Al ser notificada de la orden judicial, Lucía Hiriart sufrió una descompensación y fue trasladada al Hospital Militar. Mientras, la justicia chilena evalúa en qué lugar deberá cumplir la orden de detención.

Los hijos del matrimonio Pinochet, Augusto, Lucía, Jacqueline, Marco Antonio y Verónica ya están en prisión.

Pinochet murió en Santiago de Chile, en diciembre del año pasado, a la edad de 91 años.

Entre los militares procesados están los generales en retiro Guillermo Garín, Sergio Moreno, Jorge Ballerino, Juan Fernando Romero y Guillermo Letelier, y oficiales en servicio de alto rango: Mortimer Jofré, jefe del comando de Institutos Militares y Doctrina, y Juan Mac Lean, secretario del Estado Mayor del Ejército.

Los imputados podrían afrontar penas de entre 10 y 15 años de presidio, multas e inhabilitación para ejercer cargos públicos.

Reacciones

Frente a las acusaciones de persecución política hechas por la nuera de Augusto Pinochet, el ministro de Justicia, Carlos Maldonado, respondió que los tribunales funcionan de manera independiente y que al gobierno sólo le corresponde hacer cumplir la resolución.

A la vez, la presidenta Michelle Bachelet dijo que “nadie está por sobre la ley”.

Hay opiniones encontradas en el pueblo chileno acerca de la decisión de procesar a la familia Pinochet.

Mientras algunos manifestantes a favor y en contra se congregaron en las afueras del cuartel de la Policía de Investigaciones, en las calles de Santiago BBC Mundo recogió opiniones sobre la detención de la familia Pinochet.

“Ya estaba bueno porque nos robaron mucha plata a los chilenos y estábamos esperando hace tiempo que los detuvieran, así que bien hecho”, señaló Manuel Jaime.

“Lo encuentro malo. ¿Para qué se están desquitando con la familia?”, dijo Carmen Molina mientras ordenaba los carros del supermercado donde trabaja.

Augusto Pinochet murió el 10 de diciembre de 2006 sin afrontar una sentencia por las millonarias cuentas secretas que se le descubrieron en bancos de Estados Unidos y el Caribe.

Chávez: no más rumores sobre Castro

“Para los que quieren que Fidel se muera, se van a quedar frustrados, porque Fidel Castro nunca morirá”

El presidente de Venezuela, Hugo Chávez, declaró este sábado que no seguirá desmintiendo a diario rumores sobre la salud del líder cubano Fidel Castro.

“Qué voy a estar yo aclarando todos los días rumores y rumores que a cada rato dicen que Fidel se murió”, manifestó Chávez durante una asamblea del Partido Socialista Unido de Venezuela (PSUV).

“Para los que quieren que Fidel se muera, se van a quedar frustrados, porque Fidel Castro nunca morirá y siempre vivirá en el pueblo de Cuba, en el de Venezuela y en los pueblos de América”, reiteró el mandatario venezolano.
