Cuba restores eyesight to over a million

Well, this is the kind of thing that this guys do to gain followers and defenders. I am happy for everyone that benefits with this program. How I could not? It is a shame that the poor people from Cuba and Venezuela does no get access to this. Someone like Michael Moore will fall completely on this tramp. Will go and say, woao this guys have the best medicine in the world, everybody must be happy in Cuba and Venezuela or they are really un-thankful. Nope, that is not how it works. This is propaganda, this generates supporters, ambassadors of the “system” and generates positive images to everyone else reading the news. But if you want to know the truth, you should go to Venezuela and/or Cuba and walk in the city, and do not ask questions (people is afraid) OPEN your eyes, OPEN your ears and tell us what you see. Come back and tell us … “I was in Cuba and escape from the hotel to the real city, and this is what I saw… “

Havana, Jan 14: More than a million people in 31 countries have regained their eyesight under the Operation Miracle programme jointly sponsored by Cuba and Venezuela, Spain’s EFE news agency reported Monday.

Under the unique programme, which was launched in 2004, a total of 1,003,238 patients have undergone successful eye surgery by the end of 2007, according to a statement by the Mariscal Antonio Jose de Sucre Hospital in the Cuban town of Jagüey Grande in the western province of Matanzas.
Operation Miracle is part of the Sandino commitment, which sees both Venezuela and Cuba coming together with the aim of offering free ophthalmology operations to an estimated six million people in Latin America and the Caribbean by 2016.
It is currently active in 49 centres with 82 surgical facilities where 876 professionals of different medical specialities lend their knowledge and skill.
The project is also part of ALBA (Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas) agreement signed between the two countries in 2004, under which Venezuela supplies oil to Cuba and gets medical facilities in return.
Cuba sends hundreds of medical staff and teachers to Venezuela as per the deal, but its opponents have accused the Cuban government of sending the doctors for political purposes.

Chavez defends Colombia rebels

Hugo Chavez, the Venezuelan president, has urged the international community to stop labelling Colombia’s left-wing rebels as terrorists, a day after mediating the release of two of their hostages.

The political aims of the groups need to be recognised, Chavez told Venezuelan politicians during his annual state of the nation speech on Friday.

The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc) and the National Liberation Army (ELN) “are not terrorist groups, they are armies, real armies that occupy space in Colombia,” Chavez said.

He urged European and Latin American nations to resist what he called “US pressure”.

“I ask you [Colombian President Alvaro Uribe] that we start recognising the Farc and the ELN as insurgent forces in Colombia and not terrorist groups, and I ask the same of the governments of this continent and the world,” he said.
‘Terrorist’ organisations

The Farc is the oldest and largest guerrilla army in Latin America and has been fighting the government for several decades.
